The jail is a Type II local adult detention facility. In California jail terminology, a Type II facility can hold adults pending arraignment, during trial, and after sentence for local jail terms. BSCC's jail-population trend report showed 49 total average daily population for January through September 2023, with most of that count non-sentenced. Those figures describe the county jail population, not the CDCR conservation camp in Lewiston.

Trinity County is rural and spread over a large area. The U.S. Census QuickFacts estimate was 15,720 residents as of July 1, 2025, across 3,179.27 square miles. In a county that size, an average jail population in the 50-person range can still represent a high incarceration rate when compared with the resident base.

It also notes that a doctor is scheduled three times per week, medical request forms are used for doctor visits, a $3.00 sick-call fee may apply, and over-the-counter medication can cost $0.50 during medication pass.

Recent local public-health material adds one facility-specific point. A January 5, 2026 Trinity County notice said Public Health, the Sheriff's Department, and Probation installed Naloxone distribution boxes, including one at Trinity County Correctional Facility with 24-hour access. After regular business hours, visitors may press the front entrance door button for entry to retrieve Naloxone near the prescription drug drop-off area.

The replacement jail also has a long local history behind it. BSCC SB 863 materials described a new 72-bed project with program space and noted old facility deficiencies. Older Grand Jury reports documented capacity, ADA, staffing, maintenance, and compliance issues at the prior jail. The current facility should not be described with those old defects unless the discussion is clearly historical.
